Preparations and Background:

  • Print out this page and make copies of the phases for each team
  • The phases are lists of instructions and directions that will take students on a one hour (approximately) walk around a small section of Chongno in Seoul.
  • The first phase takes the students from the school to a coffee shop where the teacher will be waiting to hand out phases two, three and 'special'
  • Phases two and three have the students follow directions (every team follows a different path) and write down what they see (or take a 'sticker photo')
  • The 'special' phase is a list of five questions the students are to ask three non-Koreans and is to be done simultaneously with phases two and three

Procedure:

  • Divide your class into three teams
  • Give each team phase one (only) and send them on their way
  • Teachers - make sure you arrive at the coffee shop ahead of the students!!
  • Give the teams phase two, three, and the 'special' phase upon their arrival at the coffee shop
  • Teachers may want to appoint a trustworthy team leader that knows the outcome of the scavenger hunt and can help guide the students if any problems arise
  • Teachers wait at the coffee shop for everyone's return - buying coffee for the first group back is customary

Phase One
Same handout for all groups

  • Go to the Kyobo Building
  • On the corner of the alley that runs behind the building is a Kodak Film Store
  • Beside the Kodak Film Store is a coffee shop on the second floor
  • The name of the coffee shop is Coffee and Drink.
  • Go into the coffee shop and find your second clue
  • Remember to hurry

Phase Two
Group A Handout

  • From the coffee shop go left to the 3rd stoplight
  • At the 3rd stoplight cross the street
  • Walk past the Hardees and go right at the first alley
  • Keep walking and take a left at the next alley
  • Look for the bar named Mad
  • Go to the store beside Mad
  • What is the name of the store? (hint: say 'cheese') ______________________
  • Purchase one of the products in the store (be sure to include all group members and be creative)
  • After you have finished open Phase Three

Group B Handout

  • From the coffee shop go left to the stoplight/crosswalk
  • Cross the wide street (not the narrow one) to the side opposite the coffee shop
  • Turn left
  • At the 2nd stoplight (next to Hardee's) turn right (don't cross the street!)
  • Keep walking and go right at the first alley
  • On your right you will see Lucas Beer Bar
  • Go to the store beside Lucas Beer Bar
  • What is the name of the store? (hint: say 'cheese') ______________________
  • Purchase one of the products in the store (be sure to include all group members and be creative)
  • After you have finished open Phase Three

  • On the corner, beside Popeyes Chicken, is a famous historic site

  • Find the information board that explains the history of this famous site

  • After completing phase three return to the coffee shop
  • First team back wins!
